Best Piece

What piece of writing are you most proud of? It could be a poem you wrote in 5th grade, a research paper you put a lot of time into in middle school, or it could be story book you created for a grade school class. What made it your favorite piece? How much time did you spend on it, and with whom did you share it, if anyone?

  1. Last year in American Studis the Cold War paper was favorite because we got to use voice. I got to be extremely sarcastic which is the best thing ever. I enjoyed thinking of snarky things to put into the paper to make my point clear. We spent about a month working on it and I think that it turned out well because I enjoyed writing it and my grade was good on it. I shared it with a few peers that evaluated it, and also Mr. Kurt because he is the one that graded it.

  2. I would have to say that my proudest piece of writing was written in my seventh grade language arts class when we were assigned to write about something thathad impacted our life. The only thing that had ever truly impacted my life at that age was when my mom suffered a heart attack and two strokes. She was sick when I was in 4th grade but I never fully understood it until later. I dont recall what I all wrote but I do remember that Mrs. Mahoney laminated my piece and gave it to my mom. My mom read it and she cried but I think they were happy tears. I cried, too. I was so happy she was still around to read what I wrote for her.

  3. There was an assignment in middle school that sticks in my mind the most. You had to write a story about your hero, who happened to be my grandpa. I was so excited I actually turned in the assignment on time! I spent so much time running around from family member to family member trying to find out about a younger version of my grandpa. I found out he wasn't quite the saint he had always claimed to be. Learning about your hero can be a double edge sword sometimes, for example I found my grandpa had gone to jail. That was an awkward conversation/admittance. The good side of the assignment out shone the bad; however, I spent more time with my grandpa on the phone then I had done before and we became a lot closer for it. I had fun and learned maybe a little too much about my family's back story; card games that turned violent, my great grandpa blew himself off his roof, my family owned a little too much dynamite, and during a house fire my dad and my grandpa were running around desperately trying to save their TV that was still plugged into the wall. I come from a crazy, crazy story, but I wouldn't revise any of it for the world.

  5. I am most proud of the research paper I wrote at the end of sophomore year. I spent weeks writing and revising it for Mr. Demmer's class and after I finished the paper I had to give a presentation to the class over my paper. It was my favorite piece because I've never spent that much time writing one paper and it was over something I was interested in writing about.

  6. At the end of our freshman year we had to write a research paper, I choose to write about Geno Auriemma, who is a women's basketball coach. I choose to write about him because he is a great role model to look up to, and he coached many talented women's basketball players. This piece is my favorite because I learned so much about someone I looked up to, so now I respect him even more once I learn about his upbringing. This piece also was my favorite because I spent about three weeks reading and researching about Geno and his coaching techniques. I had to share this piece to the entire class and I also shared this piece with my friends.

  8. I would have to say that my best piece of writing would be my research paper sophomore year. I wrote about music and the way it has changed over the past fifty years. It is my favorite piece of literature that I have written because I love listening to music. Music has always been a big part of my life and has given me many memories. I think i spent about a month on this paper. Even though I spent that much time on the paper it really didn't turn out to great. I shared the piece with our literature, only because we had to, otherwise I probably wouldn't have shared it with anyone.

  9. My favorite piece of writing started when I was in 4th grade. We did a writing activity that was titles "Golden Biographies." We had to write a biography on a classmate. My biography was on my good buddy Gernert Ames. For starters, I spelled his name incorrectly. Since his last name started with an "A", his was the first one in the class book that we created. I was the first author to present the piece. I didn't think that it would be a big deal. Who says writing isn't permanent? I still have the booklet, and I laugh every time I bring it out from storage, (which is a weekly thing, I love to hide down in my basement, put on my letter jacket-I really don't own one-and read old papers from grade school.

  10. The most improtant piece I have ever written was a story I had thought up myself. The story is something I write purely out of enjoyment, so it is a piece that is part of me. I have not shared it with anyone at all, but I hope that I can get it published in order to become a respected author.

  11. 8th grade year I wrote a research paper about the disturbing school cafeteria food and how our school should let us have more nutritious options. What made it my favorite piece was that it opened not only my eyes but my peers and even my teachers at time. After writing my paper and informing everyone about the dangers of our school cafeteria food our school board many years later decided that we needed a change. That children these days are eating unhealthy and becoming overweight and that was partially there fault. Now we have somewhat healthier options that will hopefully improve generations of kids eating choices. I spent the last month of 8th grade year and I shared it with my peers and teacher.

    3. Yeah, I remember this one too. Mine was about how we need a new, bigger gym and an auditorium and a bigger cafeteria.

  12. To me, my best piece of writing was done in my freshman year. We told to write a paper about a personal experience, so I chose to write about the week after my Grandpa died. It had happened just the year before, and it had felt good to write about. I feel as it is one of my better written pieces because my parents had asked to read it a month after I had turned it in. When they read it, my mother started to tear up. I'm not sure if any other piece I have written has ever done that before.

  13. The Great Gatsby paper that we wrote in American Studies junior year is the piece that has the most significance to me. It was a piece that I initially had no ideas for what to write about, so I did not think that it was going to come out as well as it did; however, once I got the ball rolling, the ideas just flowed to me like gravy. Nothing feels better than going from not knowing what to put down on that blank page staring back at you to wondering if you are ever going to be able to stop. Having put in nearly twice as much time thinking about what to write versus the time that I actually spent writing, it felt good to be done after nearly a week. The most agonizing part of the paper was after having handed it in, it took a certain teacher (who may or may not have written this blog post) nearly five months to grade. If anyone had said that I took my time writing the paper, then one could say that he took a vacation from grading it. So aside from the procrastinating teacher, a couple of my friends peer evaluated the paper as well, but I do not think anyone appreciated it as much as I did.

  14. I'm probably most proud of a paper I wrote freshman year after reading "The Sound Of Thunder". The reason I feel this way about that certain piece is because I completed every step of the writing process on time and fairly well. It was also enjoyable because I felt that it was creative and clever. The objective was to reimagine the ending and make a new one. I revised it multiple times and changed my ideas and ending at least once. Since I dont feel comfortable talking about my writing in front of people, I didn't share with anyone besides Mrs. Lukes. Getting a good grade on the assignment topped it off as well.

  15. My favorite piece I have written was in English 9 with Mrs. Lukes. We had to finish, or come up with our own ending, to the short story "A Sound of Thunder". I liked doing that because there already was a story, all I had to do was match the ending I wanted to the rest of the story. It was cool because there were so many different ideas from the rest of my classmates even though we were all using the same story. I shared my ending with the rest of the class and I hoped they enjoyed it because I actually had fun writing it

  25. The most important piece I’ve ever written was when I was much younger. I was bored one day on my computer so I started writing a fictional story about a boy in War World II. He was drafted into the war and did not want to be there. This is my favorite piece because it showed my creativeness and was from my mind and my mind only. I spent about a week on it and I have never shared it with anyone.

  26. There was a paper that I wrote my freshman year for Mr. Demmer's second semester English class. We were asked to write a research paper about anything we wanted. I chose to write about the student involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. This was my favorite piece because I already had some background knowledge on this time period in history, therefore making it easier to write. The part I did not know was, how many of the people that were involved were actually students. I was surprised to find out how many adolescents would stay home from school, only to go to the local Woolworth's lunch counter to sit-in as protests. Not only did I learn how many students participated and what they suffered as consequences, I also was able to improve my writing skills in a research paper. I was required to present this paper to the entire class. I was happy to share this research because racism is still present in society today. I felt if I could share these stories of people who were actually there, I could get more people to see what could possibly be different if students had not taken part in these protests.

In my paper I included: how much I loved running, how I got a bloody nose during my district meet, and how free I felt when I was in motion. I shared this paper with my class then when I recieved a decent grade on it; I shared it with my family.

  28. The piece of writing I am most proud of is without a doubt the research paper final I wrote for sophomore English. The main reason being the topic I chose and how I handled it. Many of my fellow students decided to pick an "easy" topic; whether it was a topic they already wrote a paper on, or a topic that would be easy to write a paper over. I chose a challenging topic, a controversial topic: globalization and its effect on the United States. It was not an easy start, and I cannot say I did not have regrets soon after, but I pushed on and completed my paper. I was able to present an informative and factual paper on a topic that has and will continue to have an enormous impact on our lives and the lives of everyone on Earth. I received it back in a reasonable time frame, unlike the experience I endured during my junior year.
